WeChat Account Locked or Banned — What To Do

If you can't log in and see a message about verification or restricted functionality, it's rarely a bug. It's almost always WeChat's anti-spam system doing what it's designed to do.

Here's why it happens and how to resolve it.

Why New Accounts Get Locked

WeChat requires accounts registered outside mainland China — and some newly registered accounts generally — to be verified. An established WeChat user must vouch for you within the first 1–2 weeks of signup.

This exists to prevent mass creation of fake or bot accounts. If verification doesn't happen in time, the account gets locked with a generic error message.

The message gives no indication of the actual cause, which is why so many people assume WeChat itself is down.

How to Get Verified

Ask a friend, family member, or contact who already has an established, active WeChat account to help.
They should open WeChat, go to Discover, then Scan.
Have them scan the QR code shown on your locked account's screen.
Their account effectively vouches for yours, which typically unlocks full functionality within minutes.

Don't personally know anyone with WeChat? Regional business or community groups may help — Chinese student associations, import/export contacts, and similar.

This verification step is common knowledge within existing WeChat communities.

Why Your Account Might Get Banned (Not Just Locked)

Beyond new-account verification, existing accounts can be suspended or banned for:

Being reported by multiple other users for spam or harassment
Sending mass unsolicited messages or links
Suspicious login activity from many different locations in a short time
Violating WeChat's content policies (particularly relevant for content shared in Moments or group chats)

Appealing a Ban

WeChat provides an in-app appeals process, usually reachable from the ban notification screen. Security-related appeals (unusual login activity) tend to resolve faster than content-policy bans.

Content-policy appeals may require submitting identification, depending on the account type and region.

Is This the Same as WeChat Being Down?
